On 1st October 2025, our Pre-School 2 children at Little Sunflowers marked International Older Persons Day with a day full of learning, laughter, and kindness.
In the lead-up to the celebration, we talked with the children about what it means to grow older, why we value older people, and how we can show them kindness and respect. When the big day arrived, many of the children came dressed up as elderly people — complete with grey hair spray, walking sticks, and even a zimmer frame! One little girl turned up with rollers in her hair, and every single child looked absolutely fantastic.
To spread some joy beyond the nursery, a small group of children took a trip to Asda to choose bunches of flowers. They then stood outside the store and handed them out to elderly shoppers as a surprise gesture of kindness. The reactions were heartwarming — lots of smiles, a few tears, and even one lady who was so touched that she asked her husband to give each child £1 to say thank you.

Back at nursery, the fun continued with themed activities including a “cup of tea” tuff tray, role play tea parties, collaging with wool, and even making our own walking sticks! Each child also painted a ceramic cup or plate to take home as a special gift for someone older in their family.
During circle time, the children shared stories about the older people in their lives and why they love them. Some of our favourite quotes included:
- Abigail: “I love Grandad Tom… he makes me laugh.”
- Lawson: “I love Nanny and Grandad because they always play with me.”
- Caitlin: “My Nanny and Grandad are the best!”
It was a truly wonderful day that helped our children understand empathy, kindness, and the importance of celebrating every generation. We’re now planning a visit to a local care home so our children can continue to build those special connections with older members of our community.
